4 Giants IPA Added to Limited Series

Founders Brewing Co. has announced 4 Giants IPA as the latest addition to the Limited Series lineup. A mash up of four of the brewery’s favorite imperial IPA recipes, 4 Giants IPA (9.2% ABV) boasts aggressive bitterness balanced by a malty, sweet backbone while huge aromatics come courtesy of the seven American hop varieties.

“The world of IPA is constantly changing and evolving, but this beer really captures the essence of what I think is the classic Imperial IPA,” said Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki. “Everything about it is totally in-your-face, but the flavor dynamics still manage to work together to create a well-balanced beer that is extremely fun to drink.”

4 Giants IPA will have a retail price of $10/4-pack and will be available in 12-oz bottles and on draft beginning on March 13 in the Grand Rapids and Detroit taprooms. It will available across the brewery’s 50-state distribution network beginning in April through June 2020. Please note that 4 Giants IPA will not be available on draft in Utah. Please note that prices will vary by market. Continue reading

This Coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak has definitely changed things in pretty much everyone’s world. As I am sure you are aware, in Los Angeles County there are new restrictions for breweries and brewpubs. I will attempt to keep you posted with latest developments as far as South Bay craft breweries are concerned, and how you can support your favorite breweries in these trying times.

This situation is, pardon the pun, quite fluid, which is why I did not write this two days ago. That being said, to be on the safe side, you should probably contact the brewery directly or check their social media page to see if things have changed since I published this.

This is solely a reference guide, so all breweries will be listed in alphabetical order for your ease and mine. Continue reading

March Madness at King Harbor Brewing

These photos were taken Saturday evening at King Harbor Brewing Company, in Redondo Beach, where King Harbor regulars Diego and Michael Chavez gathered with dozens of friends and family to celebrate their birthdays and the birthdays of a couple other family members that have birthdays at this same time of year.

The Chavez family originally had a casino night planned, but when the original venue cancelled on them due to COVID-19 concerns, they reached out to King Harbor Brewing and were able to put together a nice, last minute party. Continue reading

The Brews Hall 100 Days Later

These photos were taken Thursday, March 12, at The Brews Hall at Del Amo in Torrance. While it has actually been 115 days since The Brews Hall Grand Opening and these photos, I thought 100 Days Later sounded better than 115 Days Later.

As frequently happens when a new brewery opens in the area, lots of people ask me, “how is the beer?” There are not a lot of breweries that open up trouble free, so that is usually a legitimate question. Unfortunately, I had only visited The Brews Hall once since their grand opening for a beer with a friend, and they were still new enough that they still relied on guest breweries to keep their taps flowing; so when the Vice President of Operations for the Zislis Group (owners of The Brews Hall) extended an offer for me to return and check things out, I put on my foul weather gear, grabbed a plastic bag for my camera, and headed over for a return visit. Founders Brewing Announces Unraveled IPA to Year-Round Lineup

Unraveled IPA now available year-round

Founders Brewing Co. has announced Unraveled IPA, the newest addition to the brewery’s year-round lineup. Unraveled IPA is a juicy IPA, incredibly flavorful and aromatic. This juicy IPA is dry hopped with traditional hop pellets and lupulin powder, an innovative hop product that separates lupulin from the hop flower. Wheat and oats form a smooth backdrop to carry all those wonderful hop characteristics, while the pour is beautifully clear. Unraveled IPA made its debut in the Founders taprooms as “Mucho Lupu” and was released as part of the brewery’s Mothership Series in 2019.

“This is one of my favorite IPAs to come out of the brewery in a while,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “The hop character is aggressive with its citrus and tropical flavors and aromas while the addition of lupulin powder – rather than relying on over dry-hopping with just pellets – helps keep the grassiness in check. It has great balance and is clean, bright and refreshing.” Continue reading

SoCal Vibes Soft Open Photos

These photos were taken Saturday evening at SoCal Vibes Co. in Carson, where they celebrated Leap Day with the kind of official soft open. The event featured DJs, special pricing on food from their kitchen, and special Honest Abe cider releases.

SoCal Vibes is located at the same location of the now defunct Hokulea Brewing Company. If you will recall, Hokulea shared the spot with Southern California Cider Company, aka SoCal Cider. When Hokulea closed up, SoCal Cider/Honest Abe Hard Ciders owner Spencer Chambers was determined to keep the location open. It is almost one of those “if life gives you lemons” stories. Brouwerij West 4th Anniversary Photos

These photos were taken Saturday afternoon at Brouwerij West in San Pedro, where the production brewery celebrated their fourth anniversary. The event included new beer releases, food trucks and live music.

Saturday was a very busy day in the South Bay with can releases, a soft open, and the Brouwerij West 4th Anniversary celebration. Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out how to be in multiple places at the same time, so I have to settle for being at one event at a time. To accomplish this I begin at the event furthest from my home and work my way back. That means I had to start at Brouwerij West first, which meant I got there long before the live music began. Dust Bowl Brewing Introduces Peace, Love & Haze Hazy IPA

Peace, Love & Haze can

Peace, Love & Haze now available year-round

Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is expanding its year-round portfolio with the introduction of Peace, Love & Haze. The new hazy IPA was first released in draft-only in December with the planned launch of 6-pack/12oz. cans in February. The move to a year-round hazy follows a variety of specialty hazy releases over the past two years.

“The growth in hazy beer has been remarkable,” shares Don Oliver, Brewmaster. “We are proud to offer a hazy IPA that uses a unique mix of hops to provide the juiciness and fruit flavors that hazy fans appreciate.”

Peace, Love & Haze is a tropical delight crafted with Cashmere, Idaho Gem and Mosaic hops resulting in flavors of pineapple, guava and orange. The flavorful hazy offers consumers a smooth 6.3% ABV and 28 IBU. Continue reading

Photos from the Boomtown Brewery 5th Anniversary

These photos were taken Saturday afternoon at Boomtown Brewery, a production brewery in the arts district area of Los Angeles, where they celebrated their fifth anniversary. The event featured 24 Boomtown brews, including their Anniversary Ale, a very nice west coast IPA, and several barrel aged brews.

Entertainment was provided throughout the day by a host of DJs, as well as Boomtown’s standard entertainment of pool, darts, pinball, video games, and cornhole. Food, while I was there, was available from Highland Hickory BBQ (Buddy loved their pork shoulder) and Tripp Burgers, as well as a churro popup. Continue reading

River Visits Tortilla Cantina

These photos were taken Sunday afternoon at Tortilla Cantina in Torrance, where they hosted a family event for one of their regulars, Paul Quintana. You may recall that back in July I covered a baby shower at Tortilla Cantina; Sunday’s family gathering was the formal introduction of the Guest of Honor of that shower, River, to his extended family.

There had to be at least 50 friends and family in attendance and River seemed to be enjoying all the attention he was getting as much as the aunts and cousins giving it to him.

Tortilla Cantina is a great place to hold events like this, especially if you have friends and family that enjoy craft beer. You could never provide Tortilla Cantina’s beer variety at home, and they provide really good food; I will personally vouch for the taquitos. Continue reading
