Brouwerij West 4th Anniversary Photos

These photos were taken Saturday afternoon at Brouwerij West in San Pedro, where the production brewery celebrated their fourth anniversary. The event included new beer releases, food trucks and live music.

Saturday was a very busy day in the South Bay with can releases, a soft open, and the Brouwerij West 4th Anniversary celebration. Unfortunately, I have yet to figure out how to be in multiple places at the same time, so I have to settle for being at one event at a time. To accomplish this I begin at the event furthest from my home and work my way back. That means I had to start at Brouwerij West first, which meant I got there long before the live music began. Peace, Love & Haze now available year-round

Dust Bowl Brewing Co. is expanding its year-round portfolio with the introduction of Peace, Love & Haze. The new hazy IPA was first released in draft-only in December with the planned launch of 6-pack/12oz. cans in February. The move to a year-round hazy follows a variety of specialty hazy releases over the past two years.

“The growth in hazy beer has been remarkable,” shares Don Oliver, Brewmaster. “We are proud to offer a hazy IPA that uses a unique mix of hops to provide the juiciness and fruit flavors that hazy fans appreciate.”

Peace, Love & Haze is a tropical delight crafted with Cashmere, Idaho Gem and Mosaic hops resulting in flavors of pineapple, guava and orange. The flavorful hazy offers consumers a smooth 6.3% ABV and 28 IBU. Continue reading

Supine Mega IPA – Dust Bowl Brewing Co.

January 13, 2020 (Turlock, California) Dust Bowl Brewing Co. announces the release of Supine Mega India Pale Ale, its first new specialty package in 2020. Sold in pint cans and draft, Supine is available in on- and off-premise accounts throughout California and parts of Nevada, and at all Dust Bowl Brewing Co. taprooms in Turlock and Monterey, California.

Brewmaster Don Oliver shares his thoughts on this aggressively hopped beer: “We brew a lot of big beers at Dust Bowl. Supine Mega IPA follows in the footsteps of Dump Truck of the Gods Mega IPA, but we push the beer further with a 14.4% alcohol content and a bigger hop load (85 IBU) featuring Apollo, Amarillo, Citra and Mosaic hops.”

Champagne yeast helps bring this massive IPA into the Mega category. Citrus and tropical notes fade to the background behind big notes of stone fruit. Continue reading

Founders Brewing Announces Release of Civilized Brut IPA

Civilized Brut IPA

Civilized Brut IPA – First seasonal release of 2020

Founders Brewing Co. has announced Civilized Brut, the first seasonal release of 2020. Civilized Brut is brilliantly bubbly, refreshingly crisp and stunningly clear, similar to a fine Brut Champagne. Designed for a more sophisticated IPA drinker, it has a clean and restrained bitterness. The clarity and malt sweetness allow the hop notes to tantalize your senses in a bold yet never-overpowering way. Civilized Brut marks the first seasonal release in Founders Brewing Co.’s 2020 Brand Calendar.

“Nothing says refreshment like a dry, sparkling, hop-forward IPA,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “Civilized Brut has just the right amount of bitterness and hop flavor to not overwhelm the clean and dry finish of this beer, while the high effervescence makes it feel like a party in every sip.”

“As the majority of brewers are introducing hazy, New England Style IPAs in the market, we have decided to take another road,” said President Dave Engbers. “Civilized Brut is a crystal-clear IPA that’s bursting with effervescence and elegant aromatics. Perfect for champagne and IPA aficionados alike.” Continue reading

Karl Strauss and AleSmith Debut Blink of an IPA Collaboration Beer

Blink of an IPA

Karl Strauss & AleSmith Brewing Collaboration

Karl Strauss Brewing Company has a brand new beer in its collaboration series! Introducing Blink of an IPA, an experimental India Pale Ale brewed with AleSmith Brewing Company. This limited release is fermented with Norwegian kveik yeast and will debut on October 10th in cans and on draft throughout California.

Long-time friends and first-time collaborators, Karl Strauss and AleSmith are both known for experimenting with their small batch releases. Neither brewery had previously brewed with kveik yeast, which meant that Ryan Crisp (AleSmith’s Director of Brewery Operations & Head Brewer) and Matt Johnson (Brewmaster of Brewery Operations at Karl Strauss) were eager to jump in and experiment.

“Both Ryan and I wanted to brew a Kveik IPA. Hops are usually the star in an India Pale Ale, so it was a lot of fun to primarily focus on the yeast for this particular IPA. Kveik is really such a unique strain. We were amazed how well it fermented at higher temperatures– from 78°F to 98°F!” – Matt Johnson, Karl Strauss Brewmaster of Brewery Operations. Continue reading

Ska Brewing Cans The Hazy IPA of 2019; Announces Coming Brand Refresh

The Hazy IPA – now in cans.

After much experimentation on its Mod pilot system, Ska Brewing is excited to finally offer a hazy IPA in a can— The Hazy IPA of choice after an array of test batches. This new offering from Ska will be available October 1, and it will go down as the beer that sparked Ska’s coming brand refresh.

Ska’s rendition of this popular beer style is a long time coming, named The Hazy IPA because it’s the recipe that Ska’s brewers determined would go in a can after many different batches. This 6.5% ABV, full-bodied New England-styled IPA is rich with juicy and citrus-forward tropical notes obtained through a variety of proprietary hopping techniques.

Unlike Ska’s other canned offerings, there’s not a character or a punny name associated with this beer style. Instead the artwork pops with bold colors and Ska’s trademark checkerboard stripe that wraps the can. “When we put all of these comic book elements together, we realized this was a good direction to ultimately refresh our entire line of beer cans,” says Ska’s co-founder and CEO Dave Thibodeau. Angel City Strawberry Gose Now in Cans

California’s sweetest season kicks off in April, and Angel City is letting those strawberries shine, with their limited-release Strawberry Gose. Starting this Wednesday, May 15, 6-packs of 12 oz. cans will be available from the brewery and on-tap around town at select bars and restaurants. This year’s cans feature art by local Leah Smithson, member of Art Share LA, located around the corner from the DTLA-based brewery.

Strawberry Gose is a tart, refreshing, slightly salty ale, with a fruity aroma. In fact, the beer won a Gold Medal at last year’s California State Fair for best gose-style ale. Therefore, the brewery decided to reintroduce the beer for 2019.

The gose-style was originally dreamt by a fan as part of a contest the brewery ran – ‘What Would You Brew?’ The winner participated in a brew day with Head Brewer Layton Cutler and the Angel City team. In the years following, it became more and more popular, where the beer became a consistent specialty can release. Continue reading

Pearody Ale Returns for Spring

Ska Brewing’s Pearody Ale hits the brewery’s World Headquarters in cans earlier this month and will be more widely available this year in 12 oz 6-packs across Ska’s 13-state distribution footprint seasonally while supplies last.

A crisp, refreshing ale brewed with pears, this beer is hopped with Perle, Tettnang, and Citra hops.Pearody’s champagne-like qualities stem from its creation as a celebratory beer for the City of Durango’s 40th Snowdown festival last year. “I get asked all the time when we’re bringing Pearody back, and now I have an answer,” says Ska Sales & Marketing Director Kristen Muraro. This beer was so popular that we decided to share it with all of our markets.”

Packed full of fresh fruit and hop flavors and sitting at a sessionable 4.5% ABV, this beer is a clutch sidekick for any winter or springtime activity.

Pearody will be available seasonally in canned 6-packs across Colorado, Arizona, Southern California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Utah. Continue reading

Photos from Absolution Brewing’s 5th Anniversary

These photos were taken Saturday afternoon at Absolution Brewing Company in Torrance, where the production brewery celebrated five years of brewing beer. The free-to-attend event featured about 20 Absolution brews, live music, karaoke, food trucks, and games. Attendees that purchased a VIP ticket also received anniversary glassware with a pour of their anniversary beer and a 4-pak of their anniversary beer.

As Absolution has recently begun canning some of their beers, they used their anniversary to release a canned version of their Floc-Ness Monster DIPA. On Saturday, the 4-pak cans were available on a 1-to-1 basis only, so I am not sure if they were all sold or not. You might stop by the tasting room and see what their new brewer, Erik DeBellis, has been doing. They have completely revamped from the Old World/New World theory.

While I was there, Nasty Bad Habit provided the live music, which was followed up with karaoke. There was another band that finished the evening, but I had left long before they came on. Food was available from Seafood Anarchy and Chow Down, with some cheese goodies from Spicy Mos. Continue reading
