Founders Brewing Releases Oktoberfest to Raise Awareness for ArtPrize

oktoberfest 2020

Oktoberfest – Founders Brewing Co.

Founders Brewing Co. has announced that they will launch Oktoberfest, a Märzen style lager brewed using imported German malts and hops. Oktoberfest presents a gorgeous copper hue with a rich, malty and slightly sweet backbone. Founders’ Oktoberfest is similar to a traditional Reinheitsgebot style, brewed in accordance to a 1487 German law that limits the ingredients to water, barley and hops. Debuting this August, Oktoberfest is the seventh release Founders has brewed to raise awareness for ArtPrize, an open international art competition in the brewery’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“Brewing traditional German-style beers, especially malt-forward lagers, isn’t something we’re especially accustomed to,” said Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki. “I’ve really begun to enjoy drinking Märzens over the past few years and decided to get serious about a recipe. Oktoberfest is brewed with malt and hops imported from Germany for a rich, malty character that still manages to stay light on the palate. Whether you’re celebrating Art Prize or Oktoberfest, this is the beer to do it with!”

Oktoberfest (6%) will have a retail price of $9.99/6-pack. It will be available as of August in 12-oz cans and on draft in the Grand Rapids and Detroit taprooms, and across the brewery’s distribution network, except Utah. Please note that prices will vary by market. Previous releases for ArtPrize include Green Zebra, Pale Joe, Spectra Trifecta, Mosaic Promise, Inspired Artist Black IPA and Trigo. Continue reading

Founders Brewing adds Marvelroast to Limited Series

Marvelroast

Founders Brewing Co. – Marvelroast

Founders Brewing Co. has announced Marvelroast as the latest addition to the Limited Series lineup. Marvelroast was originally a Detroit Taproom favorite, and starts out as an Imperial Golden Ale enhanced with the addition of coffee, vanilla and cocoa nibs in the brewing process. But it doesn’t end there. A final dose of milk sugar lends a smooth and sweet finish, making this a delicious treat reminiscent of your favorite iced coffee drink.

“Having two taprooms full of craft beer connoisseurs is a real blessing for our team. We get a lot of great ideas and feedback and are able to do a lot of experimentation as a result,” said Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki. “When a new beer gets great response in our taprooms, the logical move is to try to find a home for it in our distribution lineup. That’s what happened with Marvelroast. I think the perfect balance of coffee, vanilla and cocoa are going to make this beer a real treat this summer.” Continue reading

Founders Brewing Announces Unraveled IPA to Year-Round Lineup

unraveled ipa

Unraveled IPA now available year-round

Founders Brewing Co. has announced Unraveled IPA, the newest addition to the brewery’s year-round lineup. Unraveled IPA is a juicy IPA, incredibly flavorful and aromatic. This juicy IPA is dry hopped with traditional hop pellets and lupulin powder, an innovative hop product that separates lupulin from the hop flower. Wheat and oats form a smooth backdrop to carry all those wonderful hop characteristics, while the pour is beautifully clear. Unraveled IPA made its debut in the Founders taprooms as “Mucho Lupu” and was released as part of the brewery’s Mothership Series in 2019.

“This is one of my favorite IPAs to come out of the brewery in a while,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “The hop character is aggressive with its citrus and tropical flavors and aromas while the addition of lupulin powder – rather than relying on over dry-hopping with just pellets – helps keep the grassiness in check. It has great balance and is clean, bright and refreshing.” Continue reading

Supine Mega IPA – Dust Bowl Brewing Co.

January 13, 2020 (Turlock, California) Dust Bowl Brewing Co. announces the release of Supine Mega India Pale Ale, its first new specialty package in 2020. Sold in pint cans and draft, Supine is available in on- and off-premise accounts throughout California and parts of Nevada, and at all Dust Bowl Brewing Co. taprooms in Turlock and Monterey, California.

Brewmaster Don Oliver shares his thoughts on this aggressively hopped beer: “We brew a lot of big beers at Dust Bowl. Supine Mega IPA follows in the footsteps of Dump Truck of the Gods Mega IPA, but we push the beer further with a 14.4% alcohol content and a bigger hop load (85 IBU) featuring Apollo, Amarillo, Citra and Mosaic hops.”

Champagne yeast helps bring this massive IPA into the Mega category. Citrus and tropical notes fade to the background behind big notes of stone fruit. Continue reading

December 10 is National Lager Day

Hijos de Rivera lagers

National Lager Day – December 10

There are two main types of beer, lager and ale. Lager is cold-fermented and conditioned, while ale is brewed using warm fermentation. Lager has been overshadowed by hopped up crafty ales in recent years, but it turns out that we’ve always enjoyed its refreshing, crisp character. It’s the most consumed beer style in the world, accounting for about 80% of beer. Driven by current preferences for lower-alcohol, sessionable styles, it’s also become a trend to watch as more brewers realize that they have to keep up and add lager to their repertoire.

Spain’s Most Loved Lager

Spain’s largest independent brewery, Estrella Galicia has always led with lager – and has a lot to celebrate this year. Named Spain’s Most Loved Lager, Estrella Galicia has won the hearts and minds of beer lovers by focusing on more complexity and leaning into the lager style. Founded in 1906 and still family-owned, the brewery is based in the cool, northwestern region of Galicia in the coastal town of A Coruna. This beautiful Spanish city on the Atlantic Ocean is the only place in the world where the family brews beer. The result is a more complex, quality lager infused with Galician identity. Estrella Galicia uses untreated, natural water sourced from a protected natural reservoir, grows their own hop crops to support production, and uses a proprietary yeast strain. Trends come and go – Estrella Galicia has been making complex lager for over 110 years and is thrilled that craft makers are finally taking this refreshing, ever-popular style seriously. Founders Brewing Announces Release of Civilized Brut IPA

Civilized Brut IPA

Civilized Brut IPA – First seasonal release of 2020

Founders Brewing Co. has announced Civilized Brut, the first seasonal release of 2020. Civilized Brut is brilliantly bubbly, refreshingly crisp and stunningly clear, similar to a fine Brut Champagne. Designed for a more sophisticated IPA drinker, it has a clean and restrained bitterness. The clarity and malt sweetness allow the hop notes to tantalize your senses in a bold yet never-overpowering way. Civilized Brut marks the first seasonal release in Founders Brewing Co.’s 2020 Brand Calendar.

“Nothing says refreshment like a dry, sparkling, hop-forward IPA,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “Civilized Brut has just the right amount of bitterness and hop flavor to not overwhelm the clean and dry finish of this beer, while the high effervescence makes it feel like a party in every sip.”

“As the majority of brewers are introducing hazy, New England Style IPAs in the market, we have decided to take another road,” said President Dave Engbers. “Civilized Brut is a crystal-clear IPA that’s bursting with effervescence and elegant aromatics. Perfect for champagne and IPA aficionados alike.” Continue reading

Karl Strauss and AleSmith Debut Blink of an IPA Collaboration Beer

Blink of an IPA

Karl Strauss & AleSmith Brewing Collaboration

Karl Strauss Brewing Company has a brand new beer in its collaboration series! Introducing Blink of an IPA, an experimental India Pale Ale brewed with AleSmith Brewing Company. This limited release is fermented with Norwegian kveik yeast and will debut on October 10th in cans and on draft throughout California.

Long-time friends and first-time collaborators, Karl Strauss and AleSmith are both known for experimenting with their small batch releases. Neither brewery had previously brewed with kveik yeast, which meant that Ryan Crisp (AleSmith’s Director of Brewery Operations & Head Brewer) and Matt Johnson (Brewmaster of Brewery Operations at Karl Strauss) were eager to jump in and experiment.

“Both Ryan and I wanted to brew a Kveik IPA. Hops are usually the star in an India Pale Ale, so it was a lot of fun to primarily focus on the yeast for this particular IPA. Kveik is really such a unique strain. We were amazed how well it fermented at higher temperatures– from 78°F to 98°F!” – Matt Johnson, Karl Strauss Brewmaster of Brewery Operations. Continue reading

Ska Brewing Cans The Hazy IPA of 2019; Announces Coming Brand Refresh

ska hazy ipa

The Hazy IPA – now in cans.

After much experimentation on its Mod pilot system, Ska Brewing is excited to finally offer a hazy IPA in a can— The Hazy IPA of choice after an array of test batches. This new offering from Ska will be available October 1, and it will go down as the beer that sparked Ska’s coming brand refresh.

Ska’s rendition of this popular beer style is a long time coming, named The Hazy IPA because it’s the recipe that Ska’s brewers determined would go in a can after many different batches. This 6.5% ABV, full-bodied New England-styled IPA is rich with juicy and citrus-forward tropical notes obtained through a variety of proprietary hopping techniques.

Unlike Ska’s other canned offerings, there’s not a character or a punny name associated with this beer style. Instead the artwork pops with bold colors and Ska’s trademark checkerboard stripe that wraps the can. “When we put all of these comic book elements together, we realized this was a good direction to ultimately refresh our entire line of beer cans,” says Ska’s co-founder and CEO Dave Thibodeau.
