El Segundo Beer, Wine & Spirits Fest 2024 Photos

These photos were taken Saturday evening at the 2024 El Segundo Beer, Wine & Spirits Festival, which was presented by The Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum and the El Segundo Rotary Club. The charitable event featured local craft beer, wines from a couple wineries, spirits like vodka and tequila (that’s what I noticed anyway), and food from probably a dozen local eateries. There was also live music, a wandering magician, and a silent auction.

The breweries I noticed were El Segundo Brewing, Boardroom Brewery, Five Point Five Brewing, and Eureka Brewing. There was some amazing smells wafting around from local restaurants; I got some tasty samples from Raising Canes, Marmalade Cafe, and Mychal’s Learning Place. I was bummed that I was in a hurry because I really wanted to try a few others. Continue reading

The Craft Beer Guy Recap of 2023

Well, it is December 27 which means I am running out of time, and this recap of 2023 is not going to write itself. I frequently go into this task with the attitude of “what did I do this year”?, and while that remains true today, I cannot help but look back at this year and think of all the things I did not do this year. I think the combination of old age and a definite change in the craft beer world are both contributing equally. I guess we will see what 2024 brings us; in the meantime, here is my recap of 2023, beginning with the last hours of 2022.

Farewell to King Harbor Brewing

December 2022

King Harbor Brewing Company closed all three of their locations at the end of 2022, but they definitely signed off with a bang. Project Barley took over the waterfront location, a sandwich shop took over the Riviera Village location, and TrustedGut Brewing took over the brewery on 182nd Street. Continue reading

Five Point Five Brewing Company Grand Opening Photos

These photos were taken Friday afternoon at Five Point Five Brewing Company in El Segundo, when they officially opened their doors to the public, bringing El Segundo’s craft brewery count back up to four, joining El Segundo Brewing, Upshift Brewing, and Boardroom Brewery. Five Point Five is at the location previously occupied by Surfridge Brewing, and is now owned by the brewer for Surfridge, and his family.

Friday was their official Grand Opening, and while I arrived within the first couple of hours of their opening the doors, it was very well attended, not only by friends and family, but they also had attendees from El Segundo Brewing and Upshift, which is always a good sign, in my opinion. Introducing Five Point Five Brewing Company

UPDATE: Five Point Five Brewing Company will officially open Friday, August 11.

These photos were taken Friday, August 4 at Five Point Five Brewing Company, the latest craft brewery to open in El Segundo. You may recall that four months ago Surfridge Brewing in El Segundo closed their doors; Five Point Five Brewing Company, headed by Surfridge’s former head brewer Jeremy Montemagni, will replace Surfridge.

Starting at the beginning, before Surfridge closed, owners Steven and Jennifer Lieberman moved to Connecticut and opened a new Surfridge location, and had their brewer, Jeremy, flying back and forth across the country to brew at both locations. As one can imagine, that was a pretty hectic schedule and really was not sustainable; that brought about the close of the El Segundo location. It was then that Jeremy and his wife Melissa decided to team up with the talented members of Melissa’s family and together they bought the old Surfridge equipment and got their own lease for the location.
