Creature Comforts LA Soft Open Photos

These photos were taken Friday afternoon at Creature Comforts new Los Angeles location, located close to the Garment District area of L.A. Friday was day three of their soft open, which will last about a month.

For those unfamiliar, Creature Comforts is an Athens, Georgia based brewery. Because of weird laws in Georgia, they decided it made more sense to open a location in California than another in Georgia; so I guess we win.

To be honest, I had planned on going Wednesday, but they didn’t open until 4:00 and I cut it too close and hit the freeway just as rush hour started. My GPS estimated arrival time just kept climbing and I wasn’t making any progress so I made the call to wait until Friday or Saturday when they opened at noon.

I had been invited to join some people at Monkish at noon, and I had a feeling my buddy Joe “Dastardly Brews” Jupiter would be joining us, and I knew Joe was looking for something special for his 100th brewery, so I figured I would invite him along. It didn’t take too much convincing; so we finished our brews and headed to Creature Comforts.

Granted it was 1:00 PM on a Friday, and I do use the FastTrak transponder, but it didn’t take more than about a half-hour, and I was able to find a meter virtually in front of the place. I obviously made the right decision by going on Friday instead of Wednesday.

The building is over 100 years old and is huge. The taproom is 3,000 square feet and has an outdoor seating area. The production area is about 10,000 square feet, part of it being down in the basement. They have a canning line and the centrifuge (one of the most expensive pieces of hardware in the operation) had its very own room.

They have a 15-bbl brewhouse and a combination of 15-bbl and 60-bbl fermenters and brite tanks; and man that stuff is packed in. It is quite obvious that they intend to brew a lot of beer there. They plan on being able to brew 15,000 barrels a year.

So, if you looked through photos before reading, you may have noticed a couple familiar faces, especially if you frequented King Harbor Brewing. John Garcia, former brewer at King Harbor is now the brewer at Creature Comforts. And beertender extraordinaire Jaymes is lead beertender and production assistant. It was great to see them.

They were pouring 16 brews, five of which were brewed in LA, with the others coming in from Athens. I tried three, two of which were brewed here; Tropicalia IPA and Cosmik Debris DIPA. I also tried the Beautiful Mosaic DIPA that I ended up getting a 4-pak of. Joe had the Neon Cylinders which he really liked; I think he had a lager too, but I wasn’t really keeping track.

Creature Comforts Brewing is located at 1124 San Julian, in Los Angeles. They are open Wednesday through Sunday, are dog friendly, and there is food available from the neighbors sharing the courtyard. Cheers!
